Clay Shirky makes a valuable point about the emerging power of the crowd, and collaborative work. The idea of collaboration being coordinated absent of institutions is an inaccurate premise. Flickr or Facebook are institutions, as are any mechanisms that exist on the internet that facilitate coordination. So the absence of institutions is an inaccurate conception. The real test of innovation in this area will be to create new business models that coordinate within a controlled but sufficiently free institutional structure.
