Hilary Clinton as an Institutionalist

“Hilary Clinton is an Institutionalist” according to NYTimes columnist David Brooks. And the importance of being an institutionalist is a thoughtful point raised. It speaks to the idea that effective politicians have to build coalitions; lead people, engage stakeholders, gain buy-in, adhere to the rules laid out by institutions. Should they though? Those activities require agility and can be defeating when negotiations collapse but quite rewarding gratifying, when consensus is formed. In the right circumstances, it’s effective. But for the last decade, have you noticed people complaining about ineffective governments around the world? May’s disapproval rating is already where Brown’s was for example. At the centre are people with emotional and rational halves distorting reality; playing within a set of rules. Those with more power can bend the rules more confidently. It’s messy stuff, politics. But it looks like gamesmanship; not a data or policy or tested model for good government.

The existing representative democracy model holds that these institutionalist and positional activities are necessary to derive good public policy. The conflict begin squarely between insiders: civil servants, politicians, parties, ideology and interest groups. The general public is unknowable and frequently guessed at. The politicians who guess closest to reality, typically win. While public policy is delineated at the committee level in the Westminster and American congressional sphere; it might just as well to acknowledge the opposite has cache. How are things now under an unruly President is anchor for returning to deadlock but should good government be that way in the future? Recall who crafted the constitutions of Western democracies; people who didn’t even know what a telephone was let alone what the internet is or could be as a mechanism to connect citizens to their government….back to the point, Hilary Clinton was juxtaposed against a person who did not adhere to institutional deadlock. Evaluations of Trump will be biased of course, we will never know if he “did a better job than the universe where Clinton won in 2016.” – Data Scientists everywhere

“Institutions effect change, rarely do individuals…” according to David Brooks. At the moment, it looks superficially that Trump’s approach isn’t working in congress. While Trump disrupted the model with linguistic kill-shots and viral tweets; he now struggles to pass legislation just as Obama had. So perhaps the institutionalism needs to be rethought? Again, being an institutionalist means that your political triangulations need to be calculated finely; paradoxically you are constrained from having a simplified political vision that voters can align with. You can’t actually say what you are going to do otherwise your opposition will adjust their position accordingly. You have to be vague so everyone thinks you are the right person to lead us through the data wilderness. Institutionalism implies you can’t take a strong stand lest you chop away half your donors at the fundraising luncheon.

Tip-toeing as much as possible around the boundaries of legislative angst is the stuff of lawyers. It’s the attitude that “everything I say can and will be used against me in the public sphere….” And connected to that is the fact that balancing constituent needs against strategic self-interest (getting elected again) is partly why Hilary Clinton lost. In the final analysis, Hilary gambled that she did not need to uncouple herself from the institutionalist, triangulations that typify standard political operators. But I suspect that triangulation is too taxing, the cognitive effort to hold several paradoxes in mind in order to garner support detracts from developing some vision. Identity politics and triangulation alone are not galvanizing and yes, Hilary Clinton was an institutionalist, faced against an opposition that flouted those conventions, a builder or arsonist with large crowds, and so she lost. But perhaps politics needs builders and fewer lawyers. Regardless of the policy positions of either candidate, there is a revolution underway. If there is a way to overcome the negative aspects of the institutionalist model through a hitherto under defined platform, it should be welcomed….we should be working on it.

Anyway, just to change topics somewhat here’s why Hilary Clinton lost: each voter made their decision around spectrum of rationales and emotions, therefore we will never have a definitive answer using modern polling and voting technology;

1) she almost won! but Wednesday morning quarter-backing doesn’t make sense…we didn’t know Michigan or Wisconsin was that close until after the voters voted, the opposition didn’t know before either;
2) hazarding a guess, she sucks at speaking, um, um, pause to think of multi-syllabic cluster of words, it’s annoying having to wait for her to make a point, she couldn’t give a stump speech that hit any political chords with her audience, and communication is the number 1 role of leaders;
3) she didn’t have a memorable message beyond identity politics, most voters couldn’t list any of her policy goals in 2016 (part of her gamble that Trump was not gonna win and she’d have a blank cheque once in office);
4) she was trapped in a bubble of intellectual constructs, partisan thought, polling as predictive and she was disconnected from the democratic base;
5) Obama had 8 years and it was time to flip the other way;
6) All the items from What Happened are helpful to explain her loss but seriously that would have been overcome if the top 5 above was not the reality….

What’s The Deal With Mecca | Everything Your Wanted To Know About This Holy City But Were Afraid To Ask

Kaaba in MeccaWhy I Wrote This Article

I think it’s important to learn about different cultures, religions and cities because learning has the effect (I believe) of enlightening and strengthening the mind. Understanding the perspectives of others helps you understand who you yourself actually are. Intellectually closed-minded people are quite powerful in society (occum’s razor types) but they are frequently exposed as fearful of any challenge to their way of life. For them, learning about something ‘foreign’ might compromise their own identity. Open-mindedness is the path to enlighten and superior thinking, innovation and progress. This guide to Mecca is a side project created to inform.

Mecca Is For The Faithful Only Get Over ItFirst Key Point: The Restrictions of Mecca

  • As per Saudi law, non-Muslims are not permitted an entry into the city of Mecca. This might seem like a shock to westerners but rules are rules so get over it. No point over analysing this point as a non-Muslim. People who travel to this place with fraudulent passports or any other documents might receive some kind of strict punishment or could be arrested.
  • There was a non-Muslim dude who entered Mecca named: Burton but there’s more on that later.
  • Drinking of Alcohol is strictly prohibited in the place of Mecca. No surprise there as alcohol is banned in Islam. Quite an impressive doctrine considering the prevalence of alcohol again in the West but also in Asia. All such intoxicants are not allowed as per the law in Saudi Arabia which is a devoutly Muslim country.

Learn Some History Of This ReligionHistory of Mecca

The holy city of Mecca was once ruled by the descendants of Muhammad, later by sheriffs and most of them acting as independent rulers or as vassals to much bigger political parties. This narrow valley town was absorbed into the Saudi Arabia in the year 1925.

Close to as early as the 5th century, Kaaba was the place which saw the worship of deities of Arabian Pagan tribes.  The most important pagan deity for the Arabians was the Hubal which was then replaced by the quarish tribe.  These changes remained as it is till the 7th century.

The camel caravans were first used by the grandfathers of Muhammad and were also considered to be a major part of the improving economy of this place. All the exports from this place like leather, metals or live stock were loaded on camels and were sent to places like Syria and Iraq. Some of the historic stories and findings also show that there were many goods from other continents which passed through the city of Mecca. The people of Mecca during that period also signed treaties with the Byzantines and the Bedouins and also took care of the safety of those people who were travelling by providing them with water as well as pasture rights.

The Future of Mecca

There is an increased demand for ill or sickly people to be able to access Mecca. One way to solve that problem is to use technology. Surrogate pilgrims could wear cameras on their head and walk the path on behalf of the viewers in their homes in Canada or Indonesia. These ill people could experience Mecca in a virtual sense. Would that work? Probably a daft idea to be sure…

When you have someone who is not confident about what they are doing, the last thing he wants is someone else that is backing him who does know what he is doing. That’s because he will think “if the next person is too effective, I will be replaced by him.” Incompetent people will hide behind the weakness in the system, and that was endemic at Chrysler when Iacocca arrived.

Lessons from a Masters In Business Administration: What Is Strategy?

What Is Strategy? Michael Porter’s five forces have shaped business strategy since his theory was published in 1980. Five Aspects of Business Strategy: 1) barriers to entry, 2) supplier powers; 3) customer power; 4) substitutes, 5) rivalry. An example of the application of this model would be a London kebab shop: barriers are relatively low, does not require highly skilled labour, and anyone can buy a kebab shop with a bank loan. That is why so many immigrants run kebab shops in London UK, for example. If you speak bad English, have little money, and are prepared to work hard, kebab shops are a great first entrepreneurial endeavor. The suppliers to a kebab shop are those who make meat rotator machines and the variable costs like the Halal meat. There is plenty of both, so prices are lowered, and there are options to change suppliers at any time. The bad news is customers, as there are 100s of kebab shops in central London. If they don’t like your kebabs, they can go to another. Competition is fierce, and stoked by low barriers to entry, weak suppliers, powerful customers, and substitutes in the market where the business is located. In addition to the five forces is “6) complements”: Complement are for example, PCs you could get the software, and printers. The better software, and computers make the PC more desirable. Nurturing complementary businesses can have a positive effect on your business.

Competitive Advantage: either you have a cost advantage where you can make things cheaper and sell them cheaper OR you differentiated your product somehow either by making it better than your rivals or by designing it differently to appeal to a different group of people. There two forms of differentiation were known as vertical or horizontal. Vertical is meant to be better or worse; horizontal means different. Vertically differentiators would mean for example that you have two cars, one with better brakes, and steering. That car is better therefore they are vertically differentiated. If you have identical cars but one has been painted pink they are horizontally differentiated. One nightmare for a business is to have no advantage, to be neither the cheapest produce nor clearly differentiated. Bill Gates has a picture of Henry Ford in his office because it reminds him that success breads complacency. Ford was over taken by General Motors overtime. When the iPad came out, Amazon introduced the kindle fire…
